After almost a year in development, we are very excited to finally reveal WeNano to the world.

If you want to jump straight into it is already live on the Appstore.

But we do recommend that you read through this post, some of the information might be of importance to you.

So what is WeNano?

The motivation

Before going into the details, we think it is important to outline the basic idea behind WeNano and what we want to achieve. We are huge fans of Nano and the community around it, and we truly believe Nano has the properties required to be a decentralized global currency. But getting adoption and new people in, is difficult, especially during a bear market. We think that with Nano, seeing is believing rings true. There is nothing like doing a transaction and seeing the receive confirmation pop up in milliseconds. So finding a model that lets people try Nano for the first time, and give them this experience was a major motivation behind us developing this app. In addition, we wanted to build an app that really shows how a fee-less, instant currency is the perfect replacement for cash, in a creative and user-friendly way.

If we will succeed in this is a question for the future of course, but here are some of the features in the initial release that we hope people will find interesting.

Social

In WeNano, every account has an optionally public profile, with a username and an image. You can even have a short status/description if you want to. You can easily search and find other users and send them QuickTips with short messages in an instant. You can add users as your contacts, making it faster than ever to send Nano to people you know.

In addition WeNano has a unique feature where users can choose to share their location. If they do, other users of WeNano that are in the vicinity can then see them and easily tip or pay them. A use case for this can be for a street performer or a waitress sharing their location for receiving tips, but it can also be a way of finding fellow Nano supporters around you.

Spots

Another feature we are very excited about is «Spots». Spots can be described as geo-faucets placed anywhere in the world, where users within a certain range of the spot can get payouts at certain intervals. Anyone can set up a spot anywhere in the world, and there is a range of different options like distance, initial amount, how much each payout should be, etc. There is additionally an option for spots to accept a contribution, which allows other users to donate to the spot.

Wallet

WeNano has all the wallet functionality needed to send and receive Nano, including scanning QR codes, entering amounts in your local currency, and displaying your QR for other wallets to scan and send you Nano. On the other hand, it does NOT have options for multiple accounts, private key export, and other advanced wallet functionalities. WeNano was never intended to be an advanced wallet like Natrium or BB, so don’t expect these features to be added, at least not in the near future.

Secure

WeNano is non-custodial. The seed is only stored in the keychain on your iPhone. It is the only way to access your funds and your WeNano profile, so please back up your seed as soon as you have created your account. Your seed, your Nano!

Other features

A feature we are really excited about, and which we think can help bridge the gap between crypto users and merchants, is “Shops” on the map. Merchants that accept Nano will have their shop shown on the map. To get this just right we are improving our integration and experience for this. It’s important for us to mirror Nano’s seamless experience, that merchants can register their ship seemlessly too. Until we add this to the iOS app, merchants that want their shop on the map can either contact us at merchant@wenano.net or fill out this simple form.

Another neat feature is QuickTip. QuickTip allows you to tip small amounts to people in an instant, with an added message to let them know why they deserve your tip! We have even included an option for disabling authentication for QuickTips, but for security, we will request it after a certain number of QuickTips.

In addition it has many of the other features expected of a modern wallet app like push notifications, modern authentication with biometrics, and keeping your balance private.

Additional Info

Following is answers to a few questions we suspect people might have.

Is WeNano open-sourced?

As of release, WeNano is not open-sourced. We are considering options for open-sourcing the code related to storing the seed and doing transactions and/or getting some trusted individuals from the community to do an audit. We will keep you posted when there are any updates regarding this.

Why can’t I change my representative?

The option to change your representative is an important part of any Nano wallet. We want to make sure we had a good user interface for it, and a good way for users to find a choose a good representative, including alerts if you chosen representative is not voting, etc. Unfortunately, this is not ready yet but it is something that we hope include in one of the first updates.

Why do I have to do SMS verification to get payouts from public spots?

Without going into too many details, we need to have solutions for preventing people from getting payouts from spots they are not supposed to. One of the ways to handle this is with SMS verification when you do your first payout. You only need to do this to get a payout from public spots, and all other use of the app does not require this, of course.

We should also mention that we can and will suspend users from payouts that are attempting to get payouts by location spoofing etc.

Wen Android?

Hopefully, a lot of people will ask this; it would show interest in it. Unfortunately, there won’t be a full WeNano app for Android in the near future at least. But it is something we want to do at some point, and we will keep you posted as soon as we have anything to share. On the other hand, we might have something a little bit lighter planned for Android; hopefully we can reveal more about that in the coming weeks.

Final remarks

Any Nano sent to a public spot, either as the initial set up amount or as a donation to an existing one, is no longer your Nano; it has been given to the users of WeNano.

We have done rigorous testing to make sure everything is stable and bug-free. Still, as with any software, there can always be unforeseen bugs going on, especially on initial release with lots of different devices for the first time, and people using the app in ways we might not have considered. As always; your seed, your Nano!, but in general, be careful with storing large amounts of money in newly released software.

Any bugs or weird issues we would be very happy to know about, there is a channel for that in our discord. Also, any general feedback is welcome as well, of course.

For us this is just the beginning. We have several ideas and features we want to add to WeNano, but for now, we are very excited to get it out there and hope people from the community enjoy using it as much as we had developing it.

Finally, a huge thanks to the community and the people developing with Nano. We have saved a lot of time thanks to help from the guys behind Natrium and the open-sourced code from Nanovault and Nano Blocks.
